2026 Annual New Member Screening

The Midland Community Orchestra is screening for new musicians and substitute musicians, for current and future needs.We are seeking all strings, and substitutes for brass and wind players.
We are also screening for a concertmaster/mistress position. This position is open to all current Midland Community Orchestra violinists as well as new musicians.
Applicants should be prepared to play a three-octave scale and a short (3-5 minute) piece of their choice that showcases a range of technical skills (tempo, rhythm, intonation, articulation, etc). Some applicants may be asked to sight-read.
Additional requirements:
- All MCO musicians are volunteers and are required to attend rehearsals on Monday evenings from 7:30 - 9:45 pm at Midland High School. They also commit to attending a dress rehearsal the day before every concert.- The responsibilities of the concertmaster/mistress role include leading the orchestra in tuning and determining uniform bowing techniques for the string sections.

An annual new member/substitute screening occurs every August before the season starts. New musicians may also join during the concert season before rehearsals begin for each concert. Musicians interested in joining the orchestra as a member may do so by contacting Artistic Director/Conductor Gina Provenzano.Students who fulfill a need may also be accepted by the discretion of the Artistic Director. Rehearsals begin in September and take place Monday nights 7:30 - 9:45 PM at Midland High School.
New Musician ScreeningMembers must have a minimum advanced high school level proficiency with their instrument. All new players will be screened by the conductor and possibly representatives of the MCO Board or section leaders, the conductor will determine screening requirements based on the needs of the orchestra. Most qualifying adult string players who wish to join may find seats in the orchestra.
Since the brass, wind, and percussion sections are one person per part providing limited seats and opportunities, there may be occasions where more qualifying musicians wish to join than seats available. The conductor will make final selection decisions for each section based on the needs of the orchestra. The MCO often needs substitute musicians to sit in during rehearsals in the absence of a MCO member.
